A carer visa (subclass 116 and 836) allows an individual to remain in Australia for a period and provide care or assistance to his or her relatives who are unable to receive the required care and support provided by any other relative or from the welfare, hospital, nursing, or community services in Australia and has one of the following.
Has a long-term medical condition and are unable to perform daily activities OR if they are going to take care of someone in their family who is experiencing a health issue, they need professional support.
For subclass 116, the applicant must be outside of Australia while applying for the visa. Whereas for subclass 836 the applicant must in present in Australia while applying for the visa.
With this visa you can stay in Australia indefinitely, work and study in Australia.
You can enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme.
You can sponsor your relatives to come to Australia.
You can travel to and from Australia for 5 years, from the date visa was granted.
If eligible you can apply for Australian Citizenship.
You must live in Australia to provide care for a relative with long term medical condition or assist relative who needs practical support to provide care to their family member with a medical condition.
Your relative is not able to get the care they need from any other relative or from nursing, hospital, welfare community in Australia.
You must genuinely be willing and efficient enough to take care or assist your relative in Australia.
You and all the dependent family members in the visa application must meet health and character requirements.
You must be sponsored by the relative (who requires care and assistance) or their partner.
If you are applying for this visa to assist your relative for taking care of the family member, that relative and the family member who needs care must be living in the same house.
The visa application charge for this visa is $2,055 for the main applicant. There is an additional charge of $1,030 for the additional family member who is 18 plus and $515 for the additional applicant who is below 18 years of age.
Currently, the processing time for the vis application under this visa subclass is approximately 5 years.
