To address the shortage of skilled workers, the Temporary Skill shortage Visa Subclass 482 was created. Employers who are unable to find the right candidates among Australians can hire people from overseas.

The four types of subclass 482 visas are as follows:

 Short – term stream

 Medium – term stream

 Labour agreement stream

 Subsequent entrant


Why the subclass 482 visa?

Short-term stream

If your profession is included in the STSOL you may be qualified to apply for a two-year short-term TSS visa. It may be extended once onshore for an additional two years.

Holders of short-term TSS visas are permitted to stay in Australia for a maximum of four years under this program.

In contrast to the medium-term visa, there is no route to permanent residence in Australia.

It will be necessary to have at least two years of relevant work experience.

When a proviso applies, must be paid a minimum salary rate or greater.

Medium – Term Stream

You can work for as long as four years in Australia on a medium-term stream visa. If you hold a Hong Kong passport, you may be able to remain here for up to five years. You can go to Australia for studies, but you're not getting any aid from the government. For a period of validity of your visa, you may travel to and from Australia as many times as you wish. The visa application charge for this visa is $3,035 for the main applicant.

In the list of eligible short term skilled occupations, you must be nominated to work in an occupation.

In your designated field or related area, you need to have at least two years of actual work experience.

If you need to work in an area, you should have a suitable skills assessment. Unless you're exempted, you must work on behalf of your sponsor or associated organisation.

If you're not exempted from sharing evidence, you must meet the minimum level of English proficiency.

Labour Agreement Stream

A labour agreement refers to a visa which is intended for skilled workers appointed by employers covered by the Labour Agreement. This agreement is developed between the concerned department of the Australian Government and employers. For up to four years, this visa category allows you to live and work temporarily in Australia with your sponsor. Holders of a Hong Kong passport shall be allowed to remain for up to five years. You'll be able to get a degree in Australia, but no government aid is available to you under this visa type. Until the visa validity period, you will be able to visit and leave Australia a number of times. The visa application charge for this visa stream is $3,035 for the main applicant.

Subsequent Entrant

The subsequent entrant visa is for family members of TSS visa holders and holders of subclass visas 457 who are submitting separate TSS visa applications.

With this visa you are permitted to live, work, and study in Australia with this visa. Up to the end of your visa's validity period, you can enter and exit Australia as often as you choose.

If the primary visa holder is in possession of a TSS visa, the application fee will vary according to the primary visa's issuance stream (short-term, medium-term, or labour stream).

In cases where a primary visa holder holds a subclass 457 visa, and not a TSS visa, the visa application charge for subsequent entrant applications is calculated as per regulation 1240(2)(a)(ii) – "for any other applicant", with the charges being as follows:

Base application charge - AUD3,035.00

Additional applicant charge for applicants 18 and over - AUD3,035.00

Additional applicant charge for applicants under 18 - AUD760.00
